Biography

My name is Joseline Tapia and I’m a researcher in the Earth Sciences Department of the Universidad Católica del Norte. I received my geology degree from the Geology Department at Universidad de Chile and then I got a dual PhD degree from the Universidad de Chile (2011, Santiago, Chile) and Université Paul Sabatier  (2012, Toulouse, France). I have over 10 years of research experience in environmental geochemistry.

Currently I’m a principal researcher of the Millenium Institute on Volcanic Risk-CKELAR and an associate researcher of the ANDES PEAT Millenium Nucleous. I’m also an associate researcher of the following Fondecyt Regular projects 1200390, 1200423 and 1211515, all granted by the National Agency of Investigation and Development (ANID) of Chile. Between 2018 and 2021 I lead a research project also funded by ANID entitled Evaluation of contaminant element sources and mobility in contrasting hydrologic environments of Chile: Creation of regional geochemical baselines (Fondecyt Iniciación 11180090). In addition, I’m the secretary of the IGCP-707 project Origin, distribution, and biogeochemistry of Arsenic in the Altiplano-Puna plateau of South America, granted by UNESCO, which is a multidisciplinary study involving researchers from 4 different countries. During my career, I have studied diverse areas in South America including the Altiplano of Oruro as well as northern, central, and southern Chile.

In 2018, I was awarded Juveni Excellenti by the Geological Society of Chile which distinguishes a young geologist that had contributed significantly to the development of the discipline in Chile. I have published numerous research papers in distinct subject areas related to geology, environmental geochemistry, medical geology, and geology education in Chile, and I have also worked with the Colegio de Geólogos de Chile to create new and improved accreditation standards for higher education in Chile.
