The Unique Altiplano-Puna Plateau: Environmental Perspectives

Original idea and final work

We are happy to announce that our Special Issue The Unique Altiplano-Puna Plateau: Environmental Perspectives of the Journal of South American Earth Sciences is finally finished. The publications were dedicated to Earth Science research in the Altiplano-Puna Plateau with an emphasis on the environment.

Unique natural characteristics of the high-elevation region were explored such as the distinctive geology and geomorphology, and its corresponding effect on geochemical processes and biota, among other factors, as well as the role of climate on geological, geomorphological, and/or geochemical signatures. Attention was paid to human-induced (anthropogenic) impacts including mining and acid generating mine waste in the region. With a focus on past and present environmental conditions of the Altiplano-Puna Plateau, the Special Issue assessed future needs and recommended interdisciplinary efforts for better understanding the fundamental relationship between natural and anthropogenic processes in the region.
